Rapid Wien 2-0 Chelsea, Preseason Friendly: Post-match reaction

New, comments

Chelsea start the preseason with 90 minutes of running around in Vienna.

First things first, there is no player ratings form.  It's just preseason.

No, it's not fake and yes, on some level it matters (more in terms of performances and fitness rather than results), but as far as we're concerned, it's just preseason.  Win or lose, it doesn't matter.  So if you're getting worked up by this loss and finding yourself ranting and raving, maybe it's time to put down the keyboard and go outside and enjoy the sunshine.

After a lackluster first half, Chelsea seemed to cope slightly better in the second, though Antonio Conte also grew into his role as sideline blazing inferno quite well as well.  One feels he'll have plenty more shouting to do in the near future.

Next up will be Wolfsberger AC on Wednesday.  Until then a few stray thoughts.

  • Half-time subs were Oscar for a shockingly bad RLC and young Ola Aina for non-entity Baba Rahman.
  • Plenty others got to play.  Chalobah replaced Mikel, Rémy replaced the hard-working Costa, Kenedy replaced Willian, Traoré replaced Matić (Oscar dropped deeper), Atsu replaced Moses.  The later subs especially showed good hustle and effort in pressing.
  • Diego Costa, already back to his snarling self, missed a wide open header.
  • Ola Aina pinged a cross-shot off the far post.
  • Strictly four at the back today.
  • Victor Moses loves preseason and was perhaps our best player, especially in the first half.  With a bit of luck, and a few calls from the referee, he would've had an even greater influence on the match.  Will he actually get a first-team chance this year?
