Chelsea, Arsenal join race for Lille attacker - report

Chelsea and Arsenal have joined the chase for Lille attacker Sofiane Boufal, according to the Guardian. The player is also rumoured to have drawn interest from Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.

In an interview to Le10 Sport, Boufal's agent, Yvan Le Mée revealed that his client already held talks with Barça.

"We did have a meeting with the leadership of FC Barcelona in the last few weeks. There is an interest. Now the reflection is whether Sofiane Boufal will go to Barcelona to compete with MSN (Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar) or should he go to a club where he is going to start matches and express his exceptional talent."

"We have also initiated discussions with three other clubs that interest us, but they either have or will change their coach or the coach is in charge of a national team at the Euros. In England, there is interest, but the English market is just beginning. A transfer of 20 and 25 million euros is not resolved in two weeks, of course."

The 22-year-old joined Eden Hazard's former club in January 2015 for €4 million from Angers, scoring 15 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions for Les Dogues since his arrival. He's also won the accolade of Ligue 1's Best African Player last season.

Although Liverpool and Tottenham signalled their interest on previous occasions, Chelsea and Arsenal were the only English clubs reportedly willing to meet Lille's asking price of €25 million for Boufal.

In the 2015-16 season, Boufal featured mostly on Lille's left flank of their 4-3-3 scheme, but he also found his way onto the opposite flank and, on occasion, taking the pitch as the central attacking midfielder of a 4-2-3-1. He's still recovering from an MCL knee injury picked up in April 30 that took him out for the rest of the season but it shouldn't impede his move to a bigger club this summer.

Given the list of teams supposedly interested in him, Boufal should be a quality player; but is he really a need for a Chelsea squad already stacked in his position?
