According to German sports magazine Sport Bild, Chelsea are keen on acquiring Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels during the summer transfer window. Sport Bild reports that the Blues have already been in touch with an intermediary to make a move for Hummels.
Hummels' last contract extension with Dortmund was signed in 2012, and is set to expire next year. Despite only having one year left in the deal, the club want at least €35 million for the player according to the report.
This season, Hummels took part in 25 of the 27 league matches played. Captaining Dortmund since 2014, Hummels and his defensive colleagues are second-best in goals allowed in the Bundesliga with 26 - juggernauts Bayern Munich are first with 13 goals allowed.
Links between Hummels and Chelsea date back to April last year when ahead of the summer transfer window for the 2015-16 season, a report from the Telegraph indicated that Chelsea were chasing the German defender along with Manchester United. As we all know, we ended up signing Papy Djilobodji instead.
Bringing Hummels to Chelsea would be a great course of action, as he is a experienced player at the peak of his career that also carries a captain duty from his current club. His leadership on and off the pitch could be fundamental in filling the gap left by John Terry in the club, even if we are still keeping vice-captain and veteran Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic as well as an experienced English center back in Gary Cahill.
Hopefully this rumor becomes something concrete.
