Leap Day Hilario: Meta

Your daily dose of off-topic shenanigans.

COMMENTS ABOUT COMMENTING:

What I'm sure is unbeknownst to most, we here at WAGNH do have some Community Guidelines, to which you all actually agreed when signing up for an account here.  While they're well overdue for an update, and I hope to get around to them at some point soon, I'm making a quick appeal here since all y'all are most our "regulars". The pillars of our community, if you will.

So, I'd like for you all to lead by example and help keep others in line out there in the wilderness of the non-Hilario comment sections. Stuff like what I'm about to describe happens in the Hilario, too, and fairly regularly, but I'm more okay with letting it go here, though only to a certain extent.  I will not hesitate to ban for it if it gets bad, even if you've been around for a while.

As pointed out in yesterday's Hilario, there's been a rather unfortunate rise in 'meta' comments — comments about other comments, other commenters, past grievances, pissing contests, I-told-you-sos, and the like.  We lump all of these under 'personal attacks' (a category which already includes the obviously inflammatory sorts of comments), regardless of whether they're delivered directly, indirectly, through tone or sarcasm or word choice or memes or whathaveya.  You might think it's funny and innocent, but it's the sort of comment that turns casual and new users away (acting like an exclusive club) and it tends to lead to poor discussions in general anyway.  Others tend to get defensive especially if they take it personally (even if you're addressing your missive to "people who...") and it just devolves from there.  And that's not how we want comments to look.  I know that's how most comment sections on the Internet look, but that's precisely the reason I don't want them here.  And I need all y'all's help.

So, please; pretty please, with sugar on top.  Be excellent to each other and to everyone else.  Debate the topic, not the person or persons on the other side of the debate.  And when you seen an offending comment, just flag it rather than respond to it.

Thank you,
DP
