David Luiz vs. Manchester City: Four minutes of clearances, interceptions, and glorious long passes

David Luiz is the best.

David Luiz has been rather amazing since his return to Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day in August — he’s always been amazing of course, but now even the general public opinion is seemingly acknowledging that, with much of the English football media having to keep their pre-written stories about his headcase defending in the drafts folder — but his performance on Saturday was perhaps his best yet.

Here are some of the highlights, as posted on David Luiz’s official Facebook page.

Obviously, highlights are just that, highlights, so they are unlikely to show any errors in positioning or anticipation or decisions in general, but what we do see is a cavalcade of near-post clearances (Martin made specific mention of these in his tactical breakdown of Chelsea’s 3-1 win as well), well-timed interceptions, several important dribbles to relieve pressure, and a few glorious long passes and switches to help unlock City’s defense.

David Luiz’s day ended rather painfully as Sergio Aguero pretended to be a human missile and launched himself studs first into the Chelsea defender, but hopefully our most important center back will not have suffered any lasting damage. His absence from the back three could be a rather scary proposition.
