Official: Chelsea sign Matt Miazga

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

To say that young Polish-American center back Matt Miazga is a bit of an unknown quantity would be an understatement.

The 20-year-old was a key player for MLS regular season champions New York Red Bulls last season, made his US Men's National Team debut, and was tenuously linked with Chelsea back in November.  I don't think anybody seriously expected anything to come of that, but here we are at the end of the January transfer window, and Matt Miazga has become the newest Chelsea player.

It's easy to be cynical and dismiss the young, wiry defender as just another player ready to be discarded on the loan pile, or get lost on the bench like a certain Papy Djilobodji, but if Guus Hiddink's words are any indication, Miazga will get at least a token chance.

"We don't rush him but he will be one of the squad members for the future. He's a young guy stepping up to the national team and it's always good to have such players here so you can see what they are capable of in training. He's a young player, a promising player - let's see if he can get himself to the high demands of this club and the Premier League."

I suppose we shall see.  Welcome, Matt, and good luck!
