Didier Drogba (164), Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (87), Gianfranco Zola (80), Eidur Gudjohnsen (78), Salomon Kalou (60), Nicolas Anelka (59), Tore Andre Flo (50), and now, Eden Hazard. Not bad company. Not bad at all.
Chelsea's 50-goal club for "overseas" players welcomed its 8th member on Saturday, when Eden Hazard's heavily deflected shot ended up in the back of the Arsenal net. It would seem that this goal will be credited to Hazard (rather than to the unfortunate Calum Chambers)*, thus opening last year's Chelsea (and Premier League) Player of the Year's account for the season and getting him to 50 goals in his Chelsea career. It's been slow-going for Eden so far this season, just like for the rest of the team, but hopefully that all changes now.
* And if it gets taken away for some reason, we'll get to celebrate anew fairly soon, I'm sure.
It wasn't the only milestone Hazard achieved with that swing of the boot. It was also the 100th goal of his professional career; he got to 50 in Chelsea colors in 171 games, 23 less than he need to get to 50 for Lille. Hazard's pace may not even come close to Messi's or Cristiano Ronaldo's current goal-scoring output, but he is slightly ahead of Gianfranco Zola's, who got there in about 180, and quite close in terms of overall adorableness, and that's a good enough comparison for me.
Good work, Eden! Here's to the next 50!
