Squad number confirmed for new Chelsea left back Baba Rahman

The Chelsea front office tried to distract us (and probably themselves, too) earlier today by completing and announcing the signing of 21-year-old Baba Rahman from FC Augsburg.  Alas, it didn't work.  The 3-0 still happened and it still stings.  The signing of a backup left back is unfortunately not helping to heal those wounds just yet.

Still, we move on and onto more important matters, like what number shall the young man wear?  Filipe Luis, his predecessor as second-fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta, wore #3, the traditional left back number.  Numbers 6, 15-17, and 23 were also available.  Baba wore #12 last season at Augsburg and the #18 for SpVgg Fürth before then, but had switched to the #17 this summer, which is what he will continue to sport in Chelsea colors as well.

Abdul Baba Rahman will wear the Chelsea number 17 jersey.

The #17 most recently belonged to Mohamed Salah, who switched to it after Eden Hazard switched to the #10.  Previous full back owners of the shirt included Scott Minto, Danny Granville, Albert Ferrer, and the one and only Jose Bosingwa.  That's certainly an eclectic mix.

Baba may be joining at a bit of anxious time, but he's well excited about his opportunity anyway.

"I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can't wait to train with my new team-mates and very much looking forward to working with them and Mr Mourinho. I am also looking forward to having the opportunity to meet the fans as soon as possible."
