It had been rumored in Germany, Denmark, and England before, but now it's really real. Borussia Mönchengladbach want another Chelsea player on loan. Seeing how nicely the Thorgan Hazard deal worked out for them last year, it's hardly surprising.
We want to borrow still Christensen of Chelsea ... in order [to complete] our squad plans in central defense.
-Max Eberl, Gladbach director; source: SPOX
Considering that we've had to play Christensen as a right back and as a defensive midfielder to find him playing time with the Chelsea first team last season (including his Premier League debut), Gladbach's stated intent to deploy him at center back should entice us to agree to the loan. The 19-year-old needs to play and develop in his natural position.
What Eberl doesn't mention or even hint at is how the rumored contract talks are coming along between Christensen and Chelsea. Christensen has just one year left on his initial professional deal, and tying him up to a new deal before sending him out on loan is imperative, especially if they intend to take the defender on loan for two years, as the initial rumors had us believing. Otherwise, we're just making it far too easy for Gladbach to poach yet another young talent.
