The rumors (which started all the way back in January) about Filipe Luis leaving Chelsea this summer have not made too much sense so far. While the left back only featured in half of our games after his big money move last summer (and started only 20), he seemed settled and happy enough and has maintained his desire to stay and play and fight for his place throughout.
As it turns out, he may not be the agitator behind the rumors at all!
Atlético have offered Toby Alderweireld to Chelsea, not the other way round. They want Filipe Luis back, but only in a swap deal. #cfc

Suddenly, it all makes a lot more sense. Atletico may be sensing an opportunity for a deal and a steal here, especially since losing Alderweireld would be no big deal. They had already made do without him last season by loaning him out to Southampton. And this all plays nicely with the earlier rumors of a Chelsea interest in Alderweireld as well, who could possibly fit the Chelsea backup role a bit better due to his versatility.
Whether Chelsea are willing to bite and take the loss on Filipe -- we paid upwards of £16m for his services -- is another matter. He will turn 30 this summer, and his value will only decrease from here. Our willingness to do business might also depend on other pursuits as well. Rumors have us linked with at least a couple young Bundesliga defenders in Baba Rahman and Antonio Rudiger. While Rudiger is more of a center back who can also play right back in a pinch, Rahman does come highly recommended and is one of the most promising young left backs in the league. If we are looking for fresh blood at full back, we could do a lot worse than the soon-to-be 21-year-old Ghanaian star, especially at the rumored £15m or so.
