Spain have released their callups for the upcoming international break, and, as expected, Chelsea have a substantial presence in Vicente Del Bosque's team. But, perhaps, not so substantial as we might have been expecting:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, David De Gea, Sergio Asenjo.
Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Gerard Pique, Marc Bartra, Juanfran, Raul Albiol, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Juan Bernat.
Midfielders: Mario Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Mikel San Jose, Koke, Andres Iniesta, Santi Cazorla, David Silva, Vitolo, Isco.
Forwards: Cesc Fabregas, Alvaro Morata, Pedro, Diego Costa.
As I hope you gathered from the headline, the glaring omission is Cesar Azpilicueta, who is in my eyes pretty comfortably Spain's best fullback. Why didn't he get called up? I'm not so sure. The groin injury he sustained in January contributed to a dip in form, certainly, but he seems to have recovered and is back to his best now. Leaving him out of the squad makes roughly no sense unless he's carrying an injury, which Jose Mourinho would probably have told us about.
But Spain's loss is our gain. Dave gets a nice long rest. Any chance of giving us back Costa and Fabregas too, Vicente? Please?
