The Gregorian calendar might already read the seventh month of Romulus but the Summer of Schürrle rolls on like a giant wheel of cheese. Then again, when Argentina gives you the freedom of the six-yard box on a corner kick, perhaps scoring a goal is the barest of bare minimum of expectations.
Shocking, really, until one remembers that while a rematch of the two teams that contested the World Cup final not two months ago, this was but a meaningless friendly between Germany and Argentina. Though with the visiting Albiceleste running rampant in a 4-2 win, maybe they should've tried playing the final without Lionel Messi as well! Premier League record signing Angel Di Maria looked every bit worth his astronomical transfer fee in a goal-and-three-assist performance. Meanwhile, Schürrle now has 10 goals in his last 15 appearances for the German national team.
Elsewhere, Gary Cahill played the first 85 unremarkable minutes in England's snoozer of a 1-0 win over Norway at a third-full Wembley. Yawn.
Last but not least, Petr Cech was back in action of the non-Twitter trolling kind, captaining the Czech Republic to 1-0 home loss to a young and fresh-faced United States team. Unfortunately for Big Pete, the lone goal conceded rests mostly on his shoulders with yet another example of Chelsea goalkeepers having some problems with short distribution (whenever not kicking long to Didier Drogba or Branislav Ivanovic). In scenes that may remind you of Mikel vs. Liverpool or Oriol Romeu vs. Manchester United in the League Cup, Cech unwisely decided to roll the ball out to his defensive midfielder. Jiracek's control of the bouncing ball wasn't the greatest and Mix Diskerud pounced. The initial shot was saved but Alejandro Bedoya was there to tuck home the rebound.
A subpar day then for the three Chelsea boys in action on Wednesday. At least nobody got hurt.
