Lewis Baker gets new Chelsea contract

It's been a mad Friday thanks to the Fernando Torres/Diego Costa stuff, which means that there's a good chance that some very good news gets thoroughly buried. But it shouldn't: Chelsea signing young midfielder Lewis Baker to a five-year contract is a pretty big deal, and it's one that should make fans happy.

Baker, 19, is one of the gems of the academy, captaining Chelsea to the FA Youth Cup in 2012/13 and then the under-21 Premier League title last season, and although he's widely expected to go out on loan this season there's not much doubt that he could contribute to the squad in the near-future if given the chance. Securing him to a long-term deal is undeniably good news for Chelsea -- they can take their time with his development rather than worrying about a Thibaut Courtois-like situation developing in the next couple of years.
