For the last three and a half seasons, Chelsea have been the not entirely proud holders of the all-time British transfer fee. £50 million to Liverpool for Fernando Torres, was the most a Premier League club had ever paid for the rights to a footballer, and it's not out of the question that that record both affected Torres himself and had an impact on how he's been received by the fans of the club.
But now we don't have to worry about that particular millstone anymore: Manchester United have blown through the record with the signing of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid.
