Chelsea Football Club have announced today that academy midfielder George Saville has joined Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent transfer. The move itself is no surprise -- we knew he was having a medical on Monday -- but the nature of the deal is. The assumption was that Saville was going out on loan again rather than making a permanent move, which would have been in keeping with standard procedure for the youngsters, but as it turns out we're selling him instead.
It makes a certain kind of sense, though. Saville has never been quite in that upper echelon of prospects with star potential, but he's certainly shown that he can do the business for clubs in the lower leagues, and at 21 there's plenty of time for him to build a solid career at Championship level before (hopefully) moving up in the world. @ChelseaYouth has some of the details of the move here:
Good luck to George Saville, who departs Chelsea and signs a three-year deal (+1) with Wolves; fee around or up to £1m it seems. #CFC
