A fresh round of Romelu Lukaku rumours has surfaced, with DiMarzio.com leading the charge. They claim that the striker is close to Everton on a permanent deal worth €30 million, and that it could be announced shortly. This may well be true, but I'm not convinced, considering that the following quote from Everton manager Roberto Martinez is barely a day old:
There have been a lot of reports [about Lukaku], some even saying I've told people it's done but the situation is very clear. We need a number nine going into the start of the season and we will make sure we sign one. If Mo Besic comes through (ed - Besic was confirmed on Monday) we need another two signings as well before the start of the campaign and one must be a striker.
Rom created incredible memories we'll never forget and enjoyed his time at Everton but that doesn't mean anything between now and the end of the window. Everything is in the air and you can imagine there are options on the table. We'll try to work hard on it.

There are more decent quotes in there, but the message seems clear. As of yesterday, nothing was settled with Romelu Lukaku. That situation might have changed on Tuesday, but my feeling is that most of the Lukaku talk was based on hopes that Everton's press conference to announce Ross Barkley's contract extension was actually one confirming a deal for a striker, and it seems to me that Martinez isn't particularly confident that he'll get his man. It also seems to me that €30 million plus a significant wage hit might be a bit too rich for Everton's blood.
But we all have certain ways of reading things, and I might be completely off. Things can change very quickly in football.
