The Romelu Lukaku rumours keep on coming, and the prognosis is a long, annoying summer. Today has seen the return of both the Wolfsburg and the Everton stories on Sky Sports. Hurray!
The Toffees story appears to be less serious: Roberto Martinez was asked by a supporter whether the club was going to get Lukaku back this season, and he may or may not have been joking when he replied in the affirmative. Still, it's a reminder that this one's not going away.
Wolfsburg, meanwhile, have confirmed their interest in the big striker through head coach Dieter Hecking:
There are a lot of good strikers in England, and for sure Romelu Lukaku is one of them. We showed our interest, but the transfer window is open until the 31 August, so a lot of things will happen. A lot of rumours about Wolfsburg, and you'll be one of the first to know if we have our striker.
We can now class Klaus Allofs' denial that they've made a bid for Lukaku (offered yesterday to Bild) in that realm of transfer comments which have been made untruths by an omission of 'yet' -- the Bundesliga club are interested and sound like they're perfectly willing to wait as long as it takes to get him.
The cynic in me says that if we are planning to sell Lukaku, we're better off doing so early in order to reinvest that money into the squad. I don't think he should be sold, of course, but waiting until deadline day would be little short of ridiculous for everyone involved.
