Petr Cech makes injury return

Mike Hewitt

When Steve Holland said that Petr Cech was fit enough to travel with the Chelsea on the pre-season tour of Europe and that he was hoping he'd start full training soon, I don't think anyone was expecting him to be starting a match just a few days later. And yet here he is, having got the nod to play in the first half against Austrian side RZ Pellets.

This is indisputably great news for the Blues, who missed their goalkeeper badly in the tail end of last season. There's going to be a big competition between Cech and the incoming Thibaut Courtois to see who ends up as Jose Mourinho's first choice next season, and having Cech back up to speed faster and pushing Courtois can only mean that both players have to work harder to win that fight. And that can only be good news for Chelsea.

But even ignoring all that, it's awesome to see one of our great players return from injury so fast. Welcome back, Petr!
