There were a few eyebrows raised, more in curiosity than anything, when new left back Filipe Luis took a very un-left back shirt number for himself last week with the number 5. As it turned out, it was the number worn by his idol, Brazilian center back Mauro Silva and since the shirt was freed when Michael Essien left for AC Milan, Luis jumped at the opportunity to grab it.
This incomprehensible situation, at odds with all cosmic football shirt numbering laws set out by the Ancients of the Kappa Galaxy who bequeathed the rules upon whichever Englishmen decided all this has now been righted. The stars and moons and shirt numbers are once again aligned.
"There is a change to the shirt number Filipe Luis will wear for the season ahead from the one announced at the time of his signing last week. The Brazilian left-back will wear no.3.
Kurt Zouma [...] has been given the no.5 shirt."

Phew. Order's restored. Wrath of the Kappans avoided. The galaxies may be at peace once again.
So Filipe Luis continues the grand tradition of the #3 left back at Chelsea, following Ashley Cole, Asier Del Horno, Celestine Babayaro, Scott Minto, and current Chelsea U21 coach Andy Myers. Kurt Zouma meanwhile picks up the shirt once worn by Frank Lebouef and Erland Johnsen. Decent company, that.
