Mark Schwarzer signs one-year contract extension

Mike Hewitt

And on the first official day of the summer transfer window, Santa Contract Clause brought us a new goalkeeper signi... err... signing a new contract extension!

Yeah!

Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce Mark Schwarzer has today (Tuesday) signed a new one-year contract.

After doing the usual backup goalkeeper things of learning to crochet, perfecting his gum chewing technique on the bench, and playing in a few early round FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League group stage matches, Mark Schwarzer was pressed into unexpected action at the business of the season thanks to Petr Čech dislocated shoulder.

Outside of a crucial howler against Sunderland, the veteran 41-year-old did just fine.  He had been hoping for an extension, especially after he received the magic elixir of the Mourinho phone call.  Today, he got his reward (though he probably will get pushed down one spot in the pecking order with the expected return of Thibaut Courtois.)

Good job, Mark Schwarzer.  May you revel in your new Hilario role.
