Michael Essien doesn't play for Chelsea anymore, but one player under contract with the Blues will still be suiting up for Ghana at the 2014 World Cup. When the Black Stars' squad was announced on Sunday, Christian Atsu was included in the 23-man roster along with Chelsea legend Michael Essien. The full squad is as follows:
Fatau Dauda, Adam Kwarasey, Stephen Adams; Samuel Inkoom, Daniel Opare, Harrison Afful, John Boye, Jonathan Mensah, Rashid Sumalia; Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Rabiu Mohammed, Kwadwo Asamoah, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, Adriyie Acquah, Christian Atsu, Albert Adomah, Andre Ayew, Mubarek Wakaso; Asamoah Gyan, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Abdul Majeed Waris, Jordan Ayew
While his future at Chelsea is still very unclear, Atsu is looking like one of the shrewdest moves made during last summer's transfer window. He had an excellent season in the Eredivisie, and despite the presence of several other high-profile youngsters in the Vitesse Arnhem squad, a strong case could be made that he was the best of the bunch over the course of the full season. He certainly played well enough that the Blues will need to think seriously about a more challenging loan assignment next season.
