Petr Cech surgery successful; keeper out 8-10 weeks

Mike Hewitt

We all knew this one was coming, but now it's been confirmed. Chelsea are reporting that Petr Cech has undergone successful surgery on his shoulder following the injury he sustained in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Atletico Madrid. As dislocated shoulders go, Cech's quite a severe case -- one would assume that there's some rotator cuff damage in there -- and the club claim that he'll be out of action for between eight and 10 week as he recovers.

The prognosis, then, is for Cech to return in early July, which would give him ample time to slot back in for preseason training. It remains unclear whether or not he'll be competing with Thibaut Courtois for the number one spot next year, but right now what matters is that he's doing well after the operation and that he should be raring to go next season. We've got a title to win, after all.
