Bad news for the four Chelsea players involved in the England under-19 setup: they will not be going to the European Championships this summer. Needing a draw against Ukraine to advance, England -- who were in that position thanks to the heroics of one Lewis Baker -- instead ended up losing 1-0 through a devastating Callum Chambers own goal in injury time.
That, obviously, sucks for them. But there is a substantial silver lining, since it means that all four of Baker, Ola Aina John Swift and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be available for Chelsea's preseason matches. With the European Championships set for July, they would have struggled to find time for a look this summer, even with most of the seniors away on World Cup duty. Now there's nothing stopping them (I'm looking at Baker and Loftus-Cheek especially) from impressing Jose Mourinho ahead of the season proper. That'll be scant consolation for what happened, of course, but it's better than nothing.
