Yesterday we heard from Kenneth Omeruo's agents that the young defender had agreed terms with Chelsea on a new contract. And now the club has confirmed that that new deal is signed -- the 20-year-old has tied himself to the Blues through the 2017/18 season. One might imagine that the new deal involves a fairly heft wage increase for Omeruo, and it's no surprise that he's quite happy to have signed it:
I'm thrilled to sign a new contract with Chelsea and am really excited about the future. To play at such a fantastic club is a real honour for me and I'll be working incredibly hard to be successful. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time in England so far and can't wait to get going.

In the big picture, this isn't huge news -- Omeruo's a very good prospect, but he's still a prospect and unlikely to help the club out much next season -- but this does reinforce the notion that we don't really need to reinforce at centre back. With Omeruo, Kurt Zouma and Tomas Kalas we have a slew of top young players ready to battle for the number four slot, and adding more to the mix (Chelsea have been linked to both Raphael Varane and Mehdi Benatia) seems rather pointless.
Regardless, good on Omeruo for this new deal. One would be very hard-pressed to argue that he hasn't earned it.
