Firstly, this is great news for Patrick van Aanholt -- he's turned a solid year at Vitesse Arnham into a potential place at the World Cup. Named to the 30-man Netherlands squad, the left back has a chance of impressing in friendlies and making the trip to Brazil. The Dutch back line is not particularly impressive, and it's not impossible to see van Aanholt getting in.
And now for the bad news. Despite featuring in training camp, Marco van Ginkel will not be going to the World Cup. This obviously has quite a lot to do with the serious knee injury that he suffered way back in September, which ruled him out of first team football for the rest of the season. It's a real shame, because van Ginkel looked talented enough at Vitesse and in pre-season to make the cut, and now he'll have to wait another four years for a chance to play on the biggest stage.
So condolences to van Ginkel -- but let's all hope van Aanholt does enough to survive the cut to 23. Here's the full squad:
Goalkeepers: Tim Krul, Jasper Cillesen, Michel Vorm, Jeroen Zoet.
Defenders: Paul Verhaegh, Patrick van Aanholt, Karim Rekik, Stefan de Vrij, Bruno Martins Indi, Terence Kongolo, Daley Blind, Joel Veltman, Ron Vlaar, Daryl Janmaat.
Midfielders: Wesley Sneijder, Leroy Fer, Nigel de Jong, Jordy Clasie, Jonathan de Guzman, Rafael van der Vaart, Tonny Vilhena, Georginio Wijnaldum.
Forwards: Memphis Depay, Jean-Paul Boetius, Jeremain Lens, Robin van Persie, Dirk Kuyt, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Quincy Promes, Arjen Robben.
