Hungary went into the 1986 World Cup as one of the favorites. This may sound insane nowadays, but back then most everybody thought it was the second coming of the Golden Team. They had the best qualifying record of any team in UEFA. FIFA had them ranked #1 at some point. They had summarily dispatched Brazil, another favorite, 3-0 in a warmup match. And despite being drawn in the same group as defending European Champions France and a strong Soviet Union team (and Canada), all the nation had tremendous hope and expectation of success.

In their very first match in Mexico, Hungary were promptly smashed 6-0. They conceded twice within the first five minutes. The third came via a penalty. They haven't qualified for a World Cup since.

LOLArsenal.
