Chelsea loanee Bamford draws the plaudits after scoring his fifth in seven for Derby County

Michael Regan

Patrick Bamford's magical season shows no signs of stopping. After lighting up the League One scoring charts for MK Dons, Chelsea upped the challenge and switched him into the next level up. If anything, the early returns at Championship Derby County have been even better!

On Wednesday, he scored his fifth goal - universally described as stunning - in just seven appearances for Steve McClaren's side. It's a condition known as "cannot stop scoring." You may not be too familiar with this affliction; we had eradicated it alongside polio among the Chelsea striker corps.

"It was sheer quality and class to win what was a scrappy game."

"He can frustrate you and sometimes flits in and out of games, but he is a match-winner. He scores important goals - they're not just any goals."

"We're just delighted we have got him and we are very surprised at how well he has done."

McClaren wasn't kidding about important goals: two of the five were match-winners in 1-0 victories, two others were tying goals that brought about 1-1 scorelines, and the fifth started a comeback from 0-2 down to a 3-2 win. All five have come in the second half, three of them in the final quarter hour. The boy's a gamer.

He's also infectiously sympathetic:
