Chelsea will meet Manchester City very low on centre backs

Clive Rose

Jose Mourinho confirmed today that we're going to be without at least one of our regular centre backs for the trip to the Etihad this weekend. John Terry has missed two games in a row and is definitely out of Saturday's match, while Gary Cahill, who picked up a costly injury during the dying minutes at the Hawthorns, is a major doubt.

That leaves Chelsea with two senior central defenders, David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic, in the squad, which is nobody's definition of ideal. Should the manager decide to field both in a game that, while compelling, probably won't have much impact on whether or not this season is a success, he risks another injury that could severely hurt our Champions League and domestic campaign. There is another option, of course -- Tomas Kalas is still with the team -- but having him go up against Manchester City's attack might be a little bit cruel.

Ah well, it's better than having Martin Demichelis around.
