Chelsea's goalkeeper situation was a topic of much discussion this past summer, with two world class goalkeepers fighting for one spot on the pitch. Thibaut Courtois has emerged as Chelsea's new number one, and had some comments on Friday about the possibility of Petr Cech leaving the club:
"As a goalkeeper you want to play. If I was in that situation where I didn’t play a lot, then I would leave too. I think Petr is still a goalkeeper with a lot of quality and one of the best there is."
This is one of those situations where we're reminded that Courtois is still very young, as his answer makes it fairly clear that this was a very leading question. We'll now probably see this comment twisted by quite a few tabloid headlines.
At this point, there's very little doubt that Courtois will be the long term keeper at Chelsea, and that Cech will likely move on at the end of the season, if not before. Neither keeper seems to be making much of a fuss over the situation, and hopefully it remains that way for the rest of Cech's stay.
