Belgium waiting on further scans to see if Courtois will feature on Friday

Shaun Botterill

Chelsea have been criticised for their handling of Thibaut Courtois after he collided with Alexis Sanchez on Sunday, but the medical team appears to be handling the situation with the appropriate amount of caution right now. Having initially said he was expected to play for Belgium on Friday, it appears that they're making sure he's fit to play with a set of extra scans first. And if he doesn't pass those tests, no football for Thibaut.

Marc Wilmots is just fine with that:

He leaves tomorrow [Thursday] morning but still has an extra scan. When he gets here tomorrow night, there is still no problem for Friday. Chelsea just want security and I understand them. He is almost completely recovered, but not fully. Besides, even if he cannot play, we can play Simon Mignolet.

Sounds reasonable enough to me. With a concussion you want to keep checking in rather than give an initial prognosis and stick to it, so it's good -- although hardly unexpected -- that the medical staff are doing their due diligence on Courtois. And good for Wilmots for not trying to push him to play, as well. Thumbs up all around.
