The Daily Mail are running some quotes from Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler, about Chelsea loanee Josh McEachran. It seems as if Josh was willing to take a rather hefty paycut in order to join the reigning FA Cup champions, and that Chelsea and Rosler have similar thoughts on what Josh needs to do in order to regain his 'future star' status:
'They sent him out on loan and for some reason his career has stalled a little bit. He didn't progress as much as Josh and maybe Chelsea thought. Now, Josh comes into a situation here and Josh knows exactly what he needs, which way he will respond best and Chelsea also know that.'
'At the moment, Josh is not at his best so we have to make sure he recovers form, he recovers confidence and he is capable of performing consistently at a high tempo in the modern way of football.'
McEachran's ability to read the game and his passing ability have never been in doubt, but his off the ball work has left something to be desired during all three of his spells on loan. It appears that one of the focal points of his time at Wigan will involve working on his fitness, hopefully improving some of his off the ball deficiencies in the process.
WIgan have been an aggressive, pressing team all season, who have tended to control possession and create loads of shots. It's the sort of system in which Josh will likely flourish if he can handle his defensive responsibilities, but could also effectively end his Chelsea chances if he fails to adapt.
