There have been questions about what Jose Mourinho's plan at left back is going forward, especially after allowing Ryan Bertrand to join Aston Villa on loan. The loan leaves Chelsea with only three regular fullbacks on the roster, Cesar Azpilicueta, Branislav Ivanovic, and Ashley Cole.
With the way Patrick van Aanholt has been playing for Vitesse, many fans have wondered whether or not Chelsea was planning to recall the fullback to Stamford Bridge. According to Van Aanholt, that won't be happening in January. The player was asked about his future after this weekend's Vitesse game, and told reporters that the plan was for him to remain at Vitesse for the remainder of the season before returning to Chelsea this summer.
Van Aanholt is under contract until the summer of 2015, so what the club do with him after this season will likely tell us a lot about what they're thinking. At 23, he's at the point of his career where he's either got to be playing with Chelsea or move on with his career, so there's very little reason to believe he'll be offered an extension only to be sent on loan again.
