Thorgan Hazard's move to Anderlecht takes another strange twist

Dean Mouhtaropoulos

Minutes after reports from Belgium stated that Anderlecht had reached an agreement with Chelsea and Zulte Weregem for the loan transfer of Thorgan Hazard, Zulte have released a statement that the youngster won't be going anywhere. Yes, you are correct: This makes no sense whatsoever:

It's unclear how much power Zulte have at this point, considering that Hazard the younger isn't actually their player; Chelsea could probably just recall him and loan him out to Anderlecht if they felt like it. Why they would force a move to Anderlecht, however, is a bit more mysterious -- it's not a step up in competition and although I'd imagine the facilities are better at a bigger club, that's probably not enough for the Blues to push for the move.

The motive force is probably Hazard's agent, who's been involved in plenty of strangeness so far this season. But we don't really know what's going on -- the details of this move remain profoundly murky, and apparently even done deals don't count for anything anymore. Regardless, Thorgan Hazard remains a Chelsea player. It's just not entirely clear which team he's on loan to at the moment.
