Nathan Ake signs a new five-year deal although his immediate future is still a bit hazy

Mathias Kniepeiss

Some very happy news this morning down Chelsea way, as Nathan Aké puts pen to paper on a new five-year contract, trying him to the club until 2018. That seems so far away, we might even have flying cars by then.

Aké signed his first professional deal last July, which was just a three-year contract as per regulations. Now over 18, he was allowed to sign for the full five and Chelsea have smartly taken advantage, much to the delight of everyone.

"I'm very happy that Chelsea is rewarding me with a new contract for my effort and development the last years."

"I would like to thank everybody at the club for everything they did for me. Thanks to them I have come so far. I won't let them down and will keep on working as hard as I can."

Comfortable at both center back and defensive midfield - and even full back, if needed - Aké's versatility is just an added benefit to the tremendous talent and promise that he possesses.

So one for the future then, as despite making six appearances for the first team last season, I think most are expecting the young Dutchman to go out on loan this year. While all that gets sorted, he should be featuring for the Chelsea under-21 side, who open their season tonight vs. Tottenham Hotspur - so join us for the party (7pm BST, live on ChelseaTV)!
