Former Shakhtar Donetsk man Willian has been linked to a move to Chelsea on and off for at least the last twelve months. I would have figured his switch to Anzhi Makhachkala in January and the Blues' acquisition of Andre Schurrle this summer would have put a stop to the chat, and for a while it did -- the Brazilian was mostly talked about in conjunction with a switch to Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur. But apparently the Chelsea rumours are back.
We're told Chelsea in advanced talks over signing Willian. Deal close. Not done yet. #cfc— Bryan Swanson (@skysports_bryan) August 22, 2013
How should we interpret this? I think taking it at face value seems a little silly. I don't see a need for Willian on the squad, and although Jose Mourinho and Michael Emenalo know a lot more about football that I do the simple fact is that we have about a billion attacking midfielders and not spots for them to play in. Adding Willian to the mix would make managing the squad even more difficult. We also know a centre forward is the club's top priority before the window closes. Sure, Willian could be plan B, but it'd be a pretty weird plan B.
An easier way to explain this is that it's fabricated and leaked by someone in Willian's party. He's pretty close to a move to England, but if talks with Liverpool or Spurs are stalling, leaking rumours that Chelsea are looming might spook one of the teams into getting things hurried up. That's really the only context in which I can make any sense of this.
