This shouldn't really come as a surprise, as I doubt too many were expecting to see the Brazilian take part on Wednesday evening after being left out of the squad against Hull City in the opener. Whether or not he'll be ready to face Manchester United at Old Trafford remains to be seen, but match fitness will be a bit of a concern after he's missed so much time this summer.
Hopefully the dynamic defender recovers soon, as with both he and Tomas Kalas injured, depth in the center of the defense is a bit of a concern. Some combination of Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic, and John Terry ought to be enough for the VIlla game though, especially if Cesar Azpilicueta is recovered enough from Spain's traveling to take part.
