David Luiz ruled out of Hull City clash

Scott Heavey

Jose Mourinho might consider David Luiz as one of his top centre backs, but he won't get to deploy the flamboyant Brazilian in Chelsea's season opener. Luiz has been struggling with an injury since returning from the Confederations Cup, and it's ruled him out for Sunday's game against Hull City. With Cesar Azpilicueta unlikely to feature after flying back from South America on Thursday, that means that the back line is probably set.

Ashley Cole will assumedly beat out Ryan Bertrand to start at left back, Branislav Ivanovic will sit at right, and that leaves us with a centre back pairing of John Terry and Gary Cahill. Neither is particularly suited to pushing a high line, but it's not like we really need to play one against Hull anyway.

As for the rest of the team, Juan Mata is a doubt, and John Obi Mikel's just getting back from an injury that kept him out of international duty this week. Of the group that went to the Confederations Cup, it feels like the only likely candidate to start is Oscar. We should be alright, though.
