Vitesse Arnhem announced this morning that they'll be reuniting with left back Patrick van Aanholt, and one of the news outlets reporting the deal had an interesting nugget about another Chelsea player potentially joining the Eredivisie club this season. Here's what they had to say:
He is the second player after Gaël Kakuta which is leased from Chelsea, where he had little chance of playing time. Also another player of the London club, the 18-year-old midfielder Nathan Ake, is linked to Vitesse. He already played a few games in the first team of Chelsea.
Ake would be an interesting addition to Vitesse, as he'd potentially be stepping directly into the starting spot vacated by Chelsea's new midfielder, Marco Van Ginkel. He's certainly talented enough that he'll get plenty of minutes at Vitesse, and being Dutch, he should have little trouble adapting to life in the Netherlands.
While Ake saw action in a few games last year for the first team, I'd imagine very few of us feel overly comfortable with him playing significant minutes in our midfield. Because of that, a loan makes all sorts of sense, and a loan to Vitesse seems like a pretty perfect fit.
I'm sure that there is plenty of interest in Ake from all sorts of different clubs, but I'd just as soon see him loaned to Vitesse than to shop him around anywhere else. I watch all of their games anyway, and the Eredivisie is probably at the perfect level for Ake at the moment. I'll have my fingers crossed that this report is accurate, and hopefully we'll hear a bit more on it very soon.
