Aston Villa home tie re-scheduled

Gareth Copley

Chelsea were set to host Aston Villa on August 31st, but we have a date with the European Champions in the Super Cup then instead. The match against Bayern Munich means that the Villa tie has to rescheduled, and rather than pushing it back deep into the season, the Premier League have rather sensibly opted to have it as early as possible. And so we're hosting Christian Benteke and company on August 21st, days after our season opener.

There was some rumour that Jose Mourinho was pushing for an earlier date in order to create the opportunity to go top of the table as early as possible, but that seems a little bit like overthinking things -- he'd favour avoiding fixture congestion when Chelsea have to play in Europe and have domestic cups to play on top of that, and that's why I'm happy with this too.

At any rate, Chelsea will have two games under our belts by this time next month. Football's nearly here!
