The rumor that just won't die suddenly found an extra set of limbs to run for another month. Here we go again...

It's been mooted for months that Wayne Rooney would be leaving Manchester United this summer. Ever since the final weeks of the Sir Alex Ferguson reign, the press have been filtering out stories related to his potential exit with aplomb. While the entrance of David Moyes and some 'clear the air' talks were supposed to cool those jets, now we're getting the sense that Wayne, henceforth known as 'the fickle one', is none to pleased with the tone and comments of his current employer.

Kaveh Solhekol offers on Sky Sports News the notion that

"Rooney believes he is at the peak of his career and has no intention of becoming a squad rotation player or by playing second fiddle to anyone at Old Trafford.

"Since he's returned from the pre-season tour due to injury, Rooney has been in touch with the club and spoken to David Moyes on the phone - he is angry and confused at the way he's been treated."

"He believes he has nothing left to prove after nine successful seasons - yet that is what is being suggested by reports in the media which have interpreted the club's statement as meaning he's currently on trial for the coming season.

I'm not in any way emotionally invested in this transfer, unlike our pursuit of some other high-caliber players we've been attached to this summer. Rooney represents, at best a 20 goal conundrum that will further dim the prospects of the likes of Romelu Lukaku making an impact on our season. He comes with high wages and a penchant for sulking when things don't go his way, and just so we're clear, we already have one of those on the books (see: Torres, Fernando). Granted, he's entering the final year before a World Cup and will likely be doing his best to impress Roy Hodgson- but then again, it's not as if England is stocked with striking options to supplant Wayne.

The other side of the coin? José seems to be interested in his services. Recent rumblings indicate Arsenal too are looking at the idea of adding Rooney after failing in their pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain. We know that the club are continuing to investigate adding a striker to our ranks, but if the only option is an out-of-shape out-of-form expensive Wayne Rooney, we'd be better served sitting this one out. Still, based on the quotes above, it's clear that Wayne Rooney is at the very least taking a long look at his options and considering where next to ply his trade.
