EURO U21, Day 5 / Spain, Italy Confed. Cup warmups / CONCACAF Qualifying / Tuesday Open Thread

Ian Walton

Spread throughout the day, there's quite a bit of football on tap today. But only if you're so inclined, of course, and want to take a break from being glued to the transfer rumor ticker.

First up, we have the final matches of Group A at the EURO U21 Championships. Just as in the World Cup group stages, both matches start at the same time - at the top of the hour. Unfortunately for England, we already know that they're out. To keep our interested however, it sounds like Josh McEachran will actually be getting a start*. With Marco van Ginkel's transfer fee reportedly agreed, perhaps there's no better time than now for McEachran to kick it up a notch in the spotlight.

*Both Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah are indeed starting today

England will be facing hosts Israel, who still have a chance - albeit pretty small - of making the knockout rounds, while Italy will face off versus Norway in the other match. Already assured of qualification, Italy will have to aim for a perfect group record without the lovely Lorenzo Insigne who suffered a sprained ankle in the last match.

The senior Italian national team will also be in action, they will host Haiti in a friendly / warmup match for the Confederations Cup. The match will be played in Rio de Janeiro with kick-off at 2:45 P.M. EDT. In similar friendly / warmup action, Spain and Ireland will match wits on a soggy temporary pitch in Yankee Stadium. Kick-off for that one is at 8:00 P.M. EDT.

Last but not least, we have a few more games from THE HEX of CONCACAF qualifying, including the long-awaited USA national team match in Seattle, WA (vs. Panama) - that one starts at 10:08 P.M. EDT - as well as South American excitement with Ecuador vs. Argentina (5:00 P.M. EDT) and Colombia vs. Peru (4:30 P.M. EDT).

Discuss.
