Former Chelsea player Kevin Wilson is currently managing at Ilkeston FC, a Nottingham-area club which currently sits 6 divisions below the Premier League. That's not enough to prevent them getting a pre-season friendly with the first London team to lift the European Cup though, as Chelsea look set to come to town on July 30, 2013. According to Wilson:
"It will be a massive night for me, personally, to see Chelsea running out at the New Manor Ground. But, more important still, it's a real step forward for this club."
"The coaching staff at Chelsea are aware of how we are running the club and the work we are doing within our Academy. And although it was a bit of a 'long-shot' when we approached them about coming to play us, they responded very positively."
"I'm extremely grateful to them. It will be a brilliant way to generate interest within the Erewash area and set us up for the new season."
"We cannot say for sure at this stage what team they will be sending. But any side that Chelsea put out will be strong - and it will be a real privilege to play them in a pre-season game."
This friendly falls 5 days after the completion of the tour of Asia, so it's entirely possible that quite a few Chelsea first team players could be involved*. That will largely depend on the manager (looking at you, Jose), but Ilkeston fans could be in for a real treat.
*It sounds like Chelsea are planning to send a U21 side to this game
Regardless of who they play in that fixture, that's now 4 pre-season friendlies that we know of to go along with the 2-game post season tour of the US. I'd imagine that leaves 1-2 still to be released, and I'd expect word of them to leak relatively soon.
