Steaua Bucharest 1 - Chelsea 0: Initial reaction and community rating form

What an absolutely dire performance. Well done Mr. Benitez and company. Well done indeed.

Julian Finney

That was easily one of the worst performances I've ever seen from Chelsea. Rafa Benitez may think that the club would be better if the fans got behind him, but that would be considerably easier for the fans to do if we'd stop being forced to watch performances like these. I honestly think I've coached high school squads that could have put forth a better display than Chelsea did against this team, so I don't really have too many positive things to say. With that in mind, here are a few thoughts after wasting the last two hours of my life:

  • While Rafa's "rotation policy" has generally been a train wreck since he's been here, I had very little to gripe about with the starting lineup he selected today. Resting Ashley Cole and Juan Mata in less meaningful games seems like an easy decision to make, but it does appear that Rafa is on board with the club's priorities. the only minor gripe I'd have is the inclusion of Yossi Benayoun over a guy like Marko Marin, and that's only because Benayoun is out of contract in June. That's such a minor quibble that it's probably not even worth noting.
  • While I didn't have many issues with the starting lineup, the bench selection left an awful lot to be desired. One backup keeper, two right backs, a center back, a left back, and two attacking midfielders. I know we are a bit short of options with guys like Victor Moses, Demba Ba, and Ramires unavailable, but at some point wouldn't the inclusion of a Nathan Ake or even Islam Feruz make sense over a trio of extra fullbacks? Is there even a possible scenario where we'd use all three of them? #Rafalution
  • Why exactly was David Luiz on the left and John Terry on the right today? It probably didn't really make any sort of difference, but it still doesn't make even the slightest bit of sense.
  • What an absolutely dire first half performance that was. You know what happens when you aren't compact, don't press at all, and plan on lumping the ball forward to the artist formerly known as Fernando Torres to start all of your attacks? You get played off the pitch by a Romanian side without a single player that would upgrade your squad. What exactly do Chelsea work on in training now anyway? Whatever it is, it didn't show up in the first half.
  • What an absolutely dire first second half performance that was. • At least getting eliminated from the Europa League will cut down the number of times I'm forced to watch this squad play. You remember the days when boring, boring Chelsea were fun to watch? We aren't enjoying those types of days right now. I don't really care if we lose in the cup competitions, but how about making it fun to watch?
  • I'm really not looking forward to playing Manchester United on Sunday. The way this club has been playing when their opponent doesn't do everything in their power to help us should leave us expecting to lose by a fairly embarrassing scoreline.
