Lukaku runner up in Golden Boy award

Jan Kruger

Romelu Lukaku has finished as runner-up in 2013's Golden Boy voting, an award voted on by journalists and given to Europe's best young player. The winner was Juventus' Paul Pogba, and in truth the award was a race for second place behind him -- Pogba's been so good this year that he was always going to win it, and he ended up with almost double the points Lukaku tallied, at 256 to 159.

That's not to say that Lukaku didn't do very well. There are some very fine players behind him on the list, including Julian Draxler, Raphael Varane and Marquinhos, so he can be very proud of his showing. Of course, he can be more proud of his performances in 2013. Already one of the Premier League's top strikers, the only questions are how much better he'll get and whether or not he'll establish himself at Chelsea.
