Leverkusen confirm De Bruyne interest

Jamie McDonald

Kevin de Bruyne was supposed to be playing more often for Chelsea these days. Since he isn't I think it's safe to assume that he'll probably be off come January, whether that be on a loan or a permanent transfer. That's unfortunate, but that's life.

One possible destination is Bayer Leverkusen, who have confirmed their interest in the 22-year-old:

We made no secret of our interest in Kevin De Bruyne right from last summer. There are many clubs interested in him.

Regardless of our league position, we're always looking for new players.

It's possible that we do sign somebody this winter, but then again, we could go into the second half of the season with the same team and look to do something next summer.

If you do anything, then it's got to be a top alternative to what we've already got here.

Right now, De Bruyne needs playing time rather than development as he looks to keep sharp for what could be an extended World Cup campaign with Belgium, and he's already shown he's got what it takes to play regularly in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen wouldn't be an unreasonable destination, nor would former club Werder Bremen. As a Chelsea supporter and a de Bruyne fan, I'm not thrilled about the prospect of losing him -- that assist to Oscar in our first game of the year seems like a long time ago now -- but it is what it is. Sigh.
