Mexico vs. New Zealand / Wednesday Open Thread

Miguel Tovar

If you're starved of some meaningful football, this one may be of interest to you: Mexico vs. New Zealand, the first leg. Both nations were there in South Africa - with New Zealand completing a fascinating, yet boring group stage with three draws (they were the only undefeated team in the tournament) - but only the eventual winners get to go to Brazil this time around. The eventual losers go home to contemplate public failure and, if you're Mexico, national depression.

Of course it's only due to the sheer generosity of American Mexican heroes like Graham Zusi and Aron Johansson that Mexico are even in it, but perhaps USA Soccer is playing the long-con and just wanted to troll their neighbors to the south as much as possible.

The match kicks off at a rather odd 3:15pm EST / 20:15 GMT, live on ESPN & UniMás (USA) and something called Premier Sports (UK).

Discuss.
