On the Isco rumour

Claudio Villa

We're five days into silly season and the rumours keep on flying in. Chelsea have already had a pretty successful window, selling Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool for decent money and then acquiring FA Cup hero Demba Ba from Newcastle United. But here's a fun new one from the Mirror:

Sunday People Sport can reveal the Blues are close to announcing the£15million signing of Spain Under-21 international midfielder Isco.

Isco plays for Malaga and is very, very good. Superb, in fact. Which is why this rumour is kind of weird. He's the sort of player who could easily break into several elite sides as an attacking midfielder. However, that's exactly where Chelsea are best-stocked, and it's difficult to see Isco, as great as he is, doing any better than Juan Mata, Eden Hazard or Oscar.

With holes still to patch up in the first team, buying Isco (who has a €20 million release clause, I believe) makes less sense for Chelsea than for virtually any other side on the planet. It's very, very difficult to see this happening when another side could jump in offering him playing time. At €20 million it's not like everyone else is being priced out of the market.

But hey, maybe the tabloids are confusing Isco with Benat somehow.
