Bafétimbi Gomis has been loosely linked to Chelsea on and off for the last several months, and this morning Sky Sports had some quotes from Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas that confirm that Chelsea were, indeed, interested:
"Bafe has talked about Chelsea in the past as they seem a very prestigious club to him, but there are also other propositions."
L'Equipe also had an interesting quote from Bernard Lacombe on the situation with Gomis, and the manager clearly wants him to stay:
" It's annoying if you lose your best players during the season, especially Bafé. He has been our most effective player since the beginning of the season, scoring 11 goals. I spoke with the president, but when you have a financial problem, what you want ... "
I'd assume most of the interest in Gomis was coming prior to the signing of Demba Ba, but it would still seem logical that the club would have some desire to bring in another cheap bench option to provide additional depth in the center of the pitch. Gomis would seemingly be a good third choice type player, even though he's another player that would probably be an immediate upgrade to Fernando Torres.
He'd be an odd fit for this season, however, as he's cup-tied in the Europa League. That would still leave Chelsea playing someone out of position in that competition should Fernando Torres be injured, suspended, or "ill".
If I had to guess, I'd assume that Gomis was one of several players that we were looking at in case we failed to acquire Demba Ba, as opposed to a player that we are still actively chasing. Lyon would have very little reason not to mention Chelsea though, as linking one of their elite clubs in Europe to their players does not in any way hurt their perceived value. Still, I suppose he'll be worth watching, as he's almost certainly going to be moving somewhere.
