On Saturday we heard some rumours from Turkey that Fenerbahce were in for Chelsea's Raul Meireles, murmurs which caused considerable alarm amongst the community. After all, having just loaned out Michael Essien, surely Chelsea weren't silly enough to consider moving out another piece of midfield depth?
The answer is, it seems, yes, we are that silly. Today the Turkish giants issued a press release to the Turkish stock market announcing talks between the club and Chelsea over the transfer of Meireles. These kinds of things are seemingly quite common in Turkey, and many agencies are running with the line that such an announcement essentially means the move is all but done. If that is the case, then Chelsea are about to be operating with a seriously thin midfield. The 29 year old divides opinion in Chelsea camps, but there's no doubting he's a useful jack-of-all-trades capable of turning in some fantastic performances, as was the case in Chelsea's last Premier League game against Newcastle.
While Stephen managed to extract some sense from Essien's departure, I'd think he'd struggle to find some justification for this move. Chelsea seem to be raging a war to rid themselves of midfield cover, and it's not pretty.
