This is the best news to come out of what has been a disappointing weekend for Chelsea - Ryan Bertrand has reportedly signed a new five year contract taking him through to 2017, despite having signed a new deal last summer and having only played eight games for the club.
Young Bertrand has emerged as one of Chelsea's hottest talents after being entrusted with a place in the starting XI under Roberto di Matteo, most notably in the Champions League final where he played as a defensive shield for Ashley Cole. It's in the same position Bertrand has shone for Chelsea this season, starting there for both the Community Shield clash against Manchester City and the match against Newcastle, where he did a fantastic job neutralising Hatem Ben Arfa. I don't think anyone would disagree that he's earned himself a pay rise. With his growing pedigree and useful home-grown status, Chelsea have ensured they've locked down a player for the prime of his career, a period in which he will hopefully inherit Ashley Cole's left back position.
It was already a good week for Bertrand as he was selected in Roy Hodgson's squad for England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Now he's got even more reason to smile, especially if the Mail's report of a double-your-money contract is indeed true.
